Discover Brandeso

Located only 35km from Santiago de Compostela, in the municipality of Arzúa (which may be the last or second-last stage of the Camino de Santiago), Pazo de Brandeso comprises a property of twelve hectares.

There, in addition to the walled environment in which the buildings of the pazo itself are located (the chapel, the dovecote, the large granary and various porches), there are wonderful gardens to stroll around and breathe in Galician nature. A large outdoor pool is open in high season and unique boxwood labyrinths as well as two of the oldest oak forests in Galicia, both native Galician oak or "carballo" and American oak respectively can be enjoyed.

As for the main building, Pazo de Brandeso has been renovated several times, without sacrificing its original palatial structure, from its foundation in 1620 to the two most recent restorations in 1908 and 1995, and subsequently converted into a rural tourism hotel by the Xunta de Galicia in 2016.

Pazo de Brandeso: Garden & Outdoors

Garden & Outdoors

Pazo de Brandeso estate contains elements of undoubted natural and botanical value. In the east wing of the house are the remains of the boch labyrinth (Buxus sempervirens) so often cited by Valle Inclán in “Sonata de Autumn”. Other shrubs include century-old camellias (Camellia japonica), rhododendrons (Rhododendron arboreum) and wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) limited in different areas of the farm by flowering hedges of azaleas (Rhododendron mediflorum) and gardenias (Gardenia jasminoides), or green hedges of myrtle (Myrtus communis), thuyas (Thuja occidentalis) and laurel (Laurel nobilis).

But the greatest natural heritage that the Pazo de Brandeso has, no doubt resides in its tree richness and that is represented by, in addition to huge chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) and giant thuja (Thuja plicata): three groups of trees, all of them with unique characteristics. The American oak grove (Quercus rubra) that presides over the access gate to the walled enclosure of the pazo, and which was planted at the end of the 19th century, is one of the first oak groves of this type that existed in Galicia. The Galician oak or carballo oak (Quercus robur) grove, made up of trees all of them several times centuries old, is cataloged by the Xunta de Galicia in the work “Arbores senlleiros de Galicia” (Singular Trees of Galicia). Finally, also included in this catalog, is the set formed by the two monumental yews (Taxus baccata) that dominate the entrance to the main hall of the house.
